Sewing for Pregnancy Care Centres--We Need You! And a Giveaway! *Closed*

**Giveaway Closed**
This has been on my mind for quite some time now.

There are a lot of abortions that are done--so many I don't even dare to look up the statistics. In fact, if I am not mistaken those statistics are far from accurate in Canada--there are far more abortions performed than are reported.

My heart goes out to those women who find themselves pregnant unexpectedly. Either teenagers or women who have no means to support a child, etc.
And, I want to help--I really do. But, how do I go about helping these women, to in a small way encourage those who choose life for their child and also to encourage more women to do the same?
In Edmonton, just 40 minutes away, there is a Pregnancy Care Centre. This is a place that women who unexpectedly find themselves pregnant can go and get help--physical help, information, counselling, etc.

Is there a Pregnancy Care Centre in your area?
A couple of months ago, I emailed the local one here in Edmonton and this is what she told me when I asked how, as sewists can we help? What do they need? :

"Part of what we provide for our clients is a big baby hamper full of blankets and clothes. So it is really up to you what you would like to donate. We love recieving quilts, toques, clothes to add to our layettes and all our clients love them as well."

So, here is where we come in--here is where we can do a little something to show our support to those women who choose life for their children!
I propose that we sew quilts, baby clothes, etc and donate them either to your local Pregnancy Care Centre or, you can send them to me and I will bring them to the one here in Edmonton. (Just email me if you plan to send them out this way so I can give you my address!)

You can upload pictures of what you have sewn to our Flickr group!

Plus, grab a button to share and send others this way!

But, to kick this all off, we're going to have a giveaway to those who are sewing along!

These are from my stash.
I used some of each of these but there is still lots left!

Leave a blog post comment letting me know what you plan on sewing up for either your local Pregnancy Care Centre or for the Edmonton Pregnancy Care Centre!
You must leave a way for us to contact you--either an email address in your comment or that you have an email address linked up to your profile, otherwise I cannot contact you if you win.
{Please only enter if you plan on sewing along! Thanks!}
Also, this giveaway is open to US/Canada only (sorry everyone else!)
This giveaway will end on the 10th and I'll use Random.org to pick the winner.

I do plan on having other giveaways during the next 2 months, so come back to check that out.

  1. Hi Fenna - I'm not commenting to win the fabrics, but just to say - Way to go! We've sewn quilts, receiving blankets and bibs for our Crisis Pregnancy Centre and they really appreciate it. Last year in Spring Break my s-i-l's, their kids and me and my children got together one day and make 5 rag quilts for the CPC. It was a fun day and really appreciated. If you don't sew, they also appreciate monetary donations, diapers, wipes, and other baby supplies. Every bit helps!

Enjoy your day - I see that Edmonton area has received sunshine and warmth too!

  4. I opened your giveaway because I've been looking for just these pink/brown print fabrics to make a quilt for a great niece. They match a charm pack I have. So obviously, I would love to win...(if I'm not the winner...can I purchase these fabrics from you?)

But I guess, more importantly....is, I have been moved by your post and want to help. I live in Florida and am heartsick over the ease and matter of fact way we deal with abortion in this country.

I would love to make baby blankets, clothes and have my own pattern for bibs and matching burp cloths. Please provide me with your address and email address so we may discuss further how I can be involved.

Thank you for reaching out to me.

  8. We do not have pregnancy care centers, but I do sew for intensive care units for premature babies here in Hungary (they are pretty low on money, thus on clothes and blankets also). Would be a blanket or two.

  10. I am with you on crisis centers. when
I had my twin girls I never had a baby shower:( but I went to a pregnancy crisis center and asked for cloth diapers as I knew we could not afford regular diapers, they were shocked a 20 yr old woman would ask for them and obliged. I since have given back to centers to help women that choose life. As for the fabric, please do not count my entry. if you choose the lady that really wants them. I think I have some to add to the giveaway for her. if you e-mail me I will be looking as soon as I finish this post. May God bless you.

  15. I'm not commenting to win because I can't sew along right now but just to say how awesome I think this is. We are foster parents and I sew a quilt for every kiddo who comes through our house. I think it is so important for each kid to have something made just for them. I will be praying for your project!

  16. I admire your pro-life advocacy and your action to make a difference! The women's group in my church is called Relief Society and our local congregation has a Humanitarian Service Committee. We do several sewing projects for children and babies which are donated to local charities, hospitals and shelters. I'm going to add Pregnancy Care Centers to our list!

My family is in the process of moving from Ohio to Washington state so I'm not sure what centers will be near where we live but I love the idea of helping out through fabric. If I were to win, I'd make some cute burp cloths and bibs or maybe even a nursing blanket for Mom!

  26. I think it is wonderful waht you are doing. As someone who just a few weeks ago found myself in a somehwat similar situation (pregnancy wasn't viable an would have hurt myself and baby would not have made it) I chose to terminate it was a few weeks along, but I don't think there has been a night that has passed that I haven't cried and I wonder about that precious little one. I wish you much success in this and hope that you can convince as many women as possible to choose life.

  27. Probably a simple quilt! Our crisis pregnancy center is brand new and we know the family that built it so I'd check on their specific needs!
Our new baby has Down Syndrome and its been really tugging on my heart lately the astonishingly high rate of abortion for babies with suspected DS. Maybe a blanket I sew could encourage a worried pregnant mama to choose life, even if only in a small way!

  28. Our guild makes quilts that we donate to the Life Centers here in our area. The center does such a fabulous job.

  29. This is such a great idea, and something I've been wanting to do for a while. I think I will make some diaper bags, baby quilts, and bib sets to donate to the Crisis Pregnancy Center in my area.

  30. Hi. Please don't count me in your giveaway. I just wanted to say I am with you all the way on what you do. It is heart-breaking to hear about someone getting an abortion when there are so many people out there that would love and give a child a good home. There is a center here in my county for unwed mothers and I have made a lot of things for them. It is something that I enjoy doing and I know that the mothers' need all the help they can get. Please, keep up the good work. May God bless.

  31. I'm not commenting to win but in support... I don't have time to commit to making a quilt right now. But my daughter, age 13, also has Down syndrome and I echo what Crunchy Con Mommy said above. I truly hope little acts of love like making quilts for babies and moms in need will create a future world where abortion is unthinkable. God bless!

  32. I have made tons of baby items and donated in the past over the years to young tenaged moms. Blankets, booties clothing washcloths and baby towels mostly by word of mouth. As I used to have a friend who was a social worker and I started helping her with community based charity projects for unwed moms and babys born into poverty stricken homes... What agreat project you are involved with.

  39. I have sewn for some children with disabilities to earn money to help them, for wounded warriors, children in hospitals and special olympics. I never thought of pregnancy care centers. Thank you for posting this and for having a heart to help these women. I am going to check out our local center to see if they would like quilts.
