KCW Day 6--Lazy Days Lounge Pants

Day 6.

In a bid to get some variety in his wardrobe, I made my 3rd son a pair of sweats out of one of my husband's old sweaters.

Actually--out of the sleeves, waistband, and hood. The rest is still salvageable for another project!

 

 

I sewed up Gracious Thread's Lazy Days Lounge Pants in a size 2. 

It's perfect for the weather we're having today--snow.

 

 

The inside of the pockets is a thin knit from one of my old tanks.

I wish I had put that on the front inside part of the pocket, not the back, but I learned a lesson for next time!

 

Even the drawstring is taken from the old hoodie!

 I love a good upcycle.

The waistband from the hoodie became the cuffs and waistband on this.

They are a little narrower than the pattern pieces, but my son didn't need the full width anyway!

 

And, that's it for KCW for me--I'm taking Day 7 off!

 

KCW Day 5--Tree Climber Trousers

 Next up--the Tree Climber Trousers from Go-To Patterns (affiliate link) for my 3 year old son!

 

This little man is just that--little. I made the size 18 months with 2" added to the length.

To make it not sound so bad, I tagged them with a size 2 tag.

The only other modification is that I left off the back flap for the pockets.

 



 

The fabric is a denim-like fabric from our local Fabricland that I bought about a year ago.

I also used it for my diaper bag.

 

He's pretty happy about the pants and I'm pretty happy he has some pants that fit him again.

All of his were getting too short but he definitely could still wear them for width.

I have at least one more pair of pants planned for him--possibly two.

 

 

KCW Day 1--Maggie Mae Dress

 

After going through my kids' closets, I realized they all needed clothes.

All. of. them.

My oldest daughter really needed some new ones as a lot of her dresses were just getting too short.

So, she was first on the list.

 

 

I have sewn up a few of these Maggie Mae dresses now. (affiliate link)

And, I still love the pattern!

 

I received the brown fabric from a friend and the other fabric is from the Fat Quarter Shop, a long time ago now.

She is still a size 4 in width but I added at least three inches to the length of the main skirt (not the band) so that she wouldn't grow out of it for a little while at least!

It definitely couldn't have come at a better time for me!

KCW Near Fail

I had very good intentions of sewing along for KCW this round.

But, those plans were dashed when first I dealt with a very sick little girl and then the last couple of days I've been sick.

Yep, not much sewing happening here.

 

Here is what I did get done in the short 'reprieve' this week.

 

6 pairs of boxers for the boys.

 

 

I know--only 4 are pictured--the other two were hijacked as soon as they were finished.

 

I think they're a hit.

 

Blue fabric is from the thrift store and the other fabrics are all scraps.

That counts as upcycling right?

 

 

Skinnies and a Bimaa

It's KCW and I wasn't really planning on sewing along, but thought I'd pop in with a couple things!

My oldest son needed a Sunday outfit for fall and winter. 

 

 

I used the Bimaa for the top, and let him pick which collar option he wanted.

I used a ponte de roma knit for the main (from Girl Charlee (referral link)) and a knit from Fabricland for the collar and cuffs.

 

For the jeans, I used Peek-a-Boo's Skinny Jeans (affiliate link) in a nice denim from Canadian National Fabric. 

 

I sized up, thinking he'd need it with a non-stretch fabric.

I shouldn't have--it's a little saggy in the butt.

But, they'll be warmer than his linen pants for the upcoming winter, so we're all good. 

 

As a side note--I lost my camera cord during this last picture, and I could NOT find it in the leaves.

I enlisted all the kids and told them they'd get $2 if they found it.

My oldest found it and was quite pleased to add $2 to his piggy bank.

I was quite pleased to have my camera cord back (and I reminded myself to CLOSE THE CAMERA BAG!!!) Ha!

 

KCW Days 4-6 and a 1/2

Day 4 of KCW, I sewed up a pair of Mr. Two-Faced Pants from the book, 'Sewing For Boys.'

I used the size 6 months in width and the size 12 months in length.

 

 

The white fabric is from a pillow that I had unstuffed for this project.

And, the car fabric is from the Fat Quarter Shop--City Centre by Marie Perkins for Robert Kaufman that I had bought a while ago.

 

I fussy cut one of the cars to applique on the pant leg and hand embroidered some puffs of exhaust coming out the back.

 

I still need some bright orange buttons to finish off the back pockets but I had none that matched. I'll have to go get some soon...

 

Then, on Day 5, I sewed up two Tricorn Seafarers Hats from the book, 'Fabric by Fabric: One Yard Wonders.'

Again, this project is from Becka Rahn--same as the knight costumes I sewed up a while back. The fabric is actually left over from those same knight costumes.

 

First time I played with rick-rack and I really like the quick and easy results!

I left them on the couch so they'd find them in the morning. And, they did not fail me in their excitement--the oldest came into my room at 6.30 wearing his.

Now, they have their 'captain' hats as they like to call them.

On Day 6, I sewed up a Chef's hat from Ottobre 1/2013.

I think she's pretty happy:

 

The fabric is just white broadcloth I still had laying around from the capes I made for the boys.

I hand embroidered the design on and also my daughter's name--in pink as requested. She would have liked to have the whole hat in pink.

I finished this hat up quickly this morning--hence the 1/2 day.

KCW Days 1-3

The first day of KCW I spent mostly tracing some patterns and I whipped up a jersey headband for my daughter.

 

 

The tutorial for this headband came from here and the fabric I used was left-over from the infinity scarf I had made, from Girl Charlee fabric.

 

The rest of day 1 and days 2 and 3 were spent sewing up a swimsuit for my daughter. I used the Tankini/Skirtini (#3023) pattern from Jalie Patterns

 

The fabric I used for this was bought some time ago--like over a year. I had used it previously to make the same tankini for my daughter but a size smaller.
 

 

This time, I left off the shelf bra and elastic that went in the top...it just made it harder to put on and take off. Plus it was not necessary for a toddler.

 

 

So...that was my sewing for days 1-3 of KCW. What have you sewn?

 

 

 

KCW 2013

I am sewing for KCW again.

I know...I have not posted a thing that I finished.

But, I did finish a number of things--just waiting until I have a bit more time to actually make a nice post, or two, or three.

Until then, have fun the last couple of days of KCW...tomorrow is my last as I don't sew on Sundays, generally.

We'll see what I sew up tomorrow, if I get a chance!
 

 

 

KCWC Days 5 and 6

So, I sewed up some PJ pants for my oldest boy and for my girl for days 5 and 6. I know, 2 days to sew up two pairs of PJ pants is pretty sad. But, the first day was spent mostly cutting out and adjusting the pattern used and then cutting out the fabric.

 

I'm so glad I adjusted the pattern--the pants would have been enormous!

The pattern is from the book Sewing for Boys--the Kickin' Back Sweats pattern which if lengthened is the Sweetheart PJs and if shortened the Bobby's Bathers.

For my oldest son, I used the size 6/7 sweats length and size 2/3 width. He's almost 5 and this worked great--it has a nice wider hem so I'll be able to lengthen it if I don't just make him a new pair by that time.

 

For my 2 year old daughter I used the same pattern but I used the size 2/3 length and took in the 2/3 width by about 2 inches. Again, I'll be able to lengthen the pants if I want.

 

I had to add a tag to each so they (and I) could tell what is the back and what is the front.

 

The fabric used for both is flannel that I got for around $3 a metre. Pretty good deal I'd say! Unfortunately, almost two years ago, I was not wise enough in the sewing area to realize how much I'd need to make a full set of PJs. I'll probably have to buy some shirts from Walmart for cheap and applique to make them match. Or, I can try piecing things together--we'll see what I do.

But, that is a project for another day!

 

That's it for my KCWC. It was a challenge for myself to get an hour in every day, but I think I managed and got some stuff done that otherwise takes a back burner. A success I'd say.



KCWC Days 1 thru 4

And, here is my first KCWC update...

 

 

Heh I know, I know...I wasn't going to post until the end. But, I'm excited to share my busyness the last 4 days. Only 2 more days for me to go and I need to think of some other project!

First, I sewed up my daughter a top to match her London Pants. 

So, I now present...

The peasant top:

 

 

I know, it's kinda summery--made out of a linen from Fabric.com and again that same quilting cotton I received from a friend. And yep, the stars make a comeback as well. It's a very simple peasant top but I cut it a bit shorter and added a ruffle to it.

 

She's pretty thrilled.

 

Speaking of thrilled, my oldest son had once requested that I save a John Deere section of my husband's old t-shirt. And, I did. And, it sat in a box for a bunch of years. He asked every now and then, 'Mom, when are you going to make my John Deere shirt?'

I thought this would be a great time for that.

 

 

It's made out of an interlock knit from Fabric.com as well. I have had it in my stash for years. A good John Deere green. Well, actually a kelly green but it works. So this is the Raw-edged Raglan Tee again from the book Sewing for Boys. I know--I finally sewed up one for my own boys. I did do some things a bit different than the pattern called for. I only did the top the raw-edged way and the side seams I did normal--not inside out. I also hemmed the bottom and sleeves. This is a size 4/5. Next time, I think I'll sew up a 6/7 for this little man!

 

He wore it yesterday and made super sure that it stayed clean so he could wear it again today--he wiped his hands on his pants instead of his shirt. And, he also wore his John Deere hat out today so I had a John Deere boy in my company today:

 

I just couldn't resist adding this picture--he was having a grand time 'posing!'

 

But, I didn't leave my second son out. He requested that I reuse the balls on his old shirt from Children's Place.

 

 

This one the sleeves and neck band are made from that same kelly green interlock knit. The grey is a baby rib knit in heather grey. That one is also from Fabric.com. I used the same pattern again--the Raw-edged Raglan but in size 2/3. I made the same changes as I did to the John Deere one. So that is two Raw-eged Raglans for my own boys!

 

He's pretty happy about having his own mommy-made shirt as well.

Now I have to start thinking for today and tomorrow!



KCWC--I'm Sewing Along!

Alright! I am sewing along with KCWC over at Elsie Marley's.

 

I started on Monday the 8th, didn't get quite an hour in on the 9th but made up for it last night.

I'm not going to post any pictures until I'm done the week but I'm quite excited to be sewing along and getting a number of items done in a week!

I won't be sewing on the 14th as it's Sunday and tomorrow I will be teaching sewing to some girls but I hope to still get some sewing in tomorrow evening as well as tonight and hopefully Saturday during the day.
