A Fall Outfit

I've been wanting to sew up a Military Messenger Bag in faux leather for quite sometime now.

When I got some faux leather in a destash/sale from West Coast Fabric, I knew exactly what it'd be for.

I had already bought some webbing from a neat little quilt shop in Canmore, AB so I was all set.

Yet, I was a little intimidated--I knew if I made an error you'd be able to see where I had to seam rip.

So, I put it off. And off.

Finally, I got up the nerve and just started cutting and then sewing.

The hardest part was the fact that the faux leather would stick to the presser foot and not move as it was supposed to.

Some people gave tips, and I ended up taping some masking tape to the bottom of my presser foot to make it more slippery.

I'm so glad it got finished--I love how it turned out!

The sweater is also a newer sew.

It's the Relaxed Raglan from Patterns for Pirates.

The fabric is (or shall I say was) an XXL men's shirt from Walmart for $3.

I did a lot of seam ripping to be able to re-use the neck band, hem and sleeve bands, and was even able to keep the fancy V on the neckline!

I had to do the 3/4 sleeves as I didn't have enough fabric to get a long raglan sleeve out of a regular sleeved men's shirt.

The sweater is super comfy and a bit of a step away from a lot of my pinks and florals that I love so much.

Back to School Tour

We're not heading back to school as we homeschool, but each fall the kids are in dire need of some new, well fitting, un-torn, un-stained clothes.

We do often leave the house for swimming lessons, co-ops, and other functions after all.

So, first up is the Nivalis Dress from Sofilantjes and the Caramel Leggings from Filles a Maman.

My daughter is thrilled with this outfit!

I love the style of the Nivalis--I'm a sucker for European style.

And the Caramel Leggings.

What I love about these is that they are not just plain leggings.

They actually have design features, and the fit is great.

Next up is the Dax Trousers from Gracious Threads, the Military Messenger Bag from FABulous Home Sewn, and Rascal Raglan from Ottobre 4/2013.

So for this one, the Dax Trousers are such a classic pant style.

The functioning fly, adjustable waist, and welt pockets make it so you can have play pants with a sturdy denim or you can have Sunday pants with a fancier fabric.

My son uses the Military Messenger Bag for taking his Bible, pen, notebook, and other 'necessities' to Church.

It makes a great book bag!

The shirt is a staple in this house. I keep turning back to this pattern for my kids.

I do put a different cuff on this shirt than is provided in the magazine.

They have you put a cuff on single-layered and then still hem that. I do a folded over cuff so I don't need to hem the sleeves. It makes it a bit of a quicker sew and I prefer the look.

Military Messenger Bag: A New Pattern

I'm a little late in announcing it here, but if you've been following along on Facebook, you may have seen/heard that there is a new pattern out!

The Military Messenger Bag.

And, what is even more exciting is that it is in One Thimble.

That's right--right now it is exclusively available from One Thimble--either in Issue 15 or as a stand-alone pattern.

This is the blurb I came up with about it:

Inspired by my sons' love of anything military, I designed this bag as a book bag for pre-teens and teenagers. However, depending on your fabric choice, it works great for adults as well, as it includes a longer strap option for adults. Both strap options are adjustable.

The main features include the bellow pockets on the front, highlighted by the grommets. Also, the bag is reinforced by webbing that goes all the way around the sides and bottom to make sure that your creation will withstand the rigors of lugging books and other items.

There are two options included. Option 1 is an asymmetrical flap with one pocket while Option 2 is a symmetrical flap with two pockets. Or, you can leave the pockets off and applique, embroider, or otherwise decorate the flap--the possibilities are endless!

This pattern includes printable pattern pieces and clear instructions with full color pictures.

Finished size is approximately:

Height: 12" Width: 10.75" and Depth 2"

Both my boys LOVE their bags!

They take their Bibles and notebooks to Church in them, and they look pretty cool in the meantime.

Fabrics used are a brown denim from Canadian National Fabric, and the rest are a camo twill type fabric and two quilting cottons from my stash.

Hardware is from Emmaline Bags and the webbing from Cleaners Supply.

Momiform MAKEover

This is an exciting post for me.

I've often struggled with dressing in a somewhat stylish fashion...

And, then in comes, 'Momiform MAKEover.'

My plan was to make somewhat of a wardrobe that was stylish, yet comfy.

I want to look put-together at home, while I take care of my rambunctious brood,

and when I head out to town with them in tow!

First up, is the Katie Dress from Greenstyle Creations, along with a new bag pattern, the Buckle Me Up Beauty.

Here I am with my 'Mom-mobile,' all ready to go.

I sewed the Katie Dress up in a lovely cotton knit from Canadian National Fabric.

The flattering gather in the bodice takes it from being just another knit dress to being something fun and stylish.

The Buckle Me Up Beauty is sewn in a brown twill type fabric from my stash with a cotton lining from my local-ish Fabricland, with hardware from Emmaline Bags.

This is the small version, which is great if you're out without the kids...no diaper bag...yay!

I couldn't keep it at one...

The second outfit I made is Jocole's A-line Yoga Skirt and the Willow Wrap Top from Love Notions.

The maxi skirt is sewn with an amazingly soft and comfy knit from Canadian National Fabric.

(Can you tell I really like that shop!)

The yoga waistband and the fitted skirt make for a super comfortable, yet stylish look.

And, the top is sewn from a very drapey knit from Fabricland.

I sewed the top with the higher neckline, and I love how it turned out.

It's modest, yet stylish--perfect for running after kids!

Plus, the asymmetrical style with the pleated side takes it up a notch from being a plain old shirt.

The pattern is easy to follow, and the fit is spot on.

Yes, two wasn't enough either...

Here is number three!

The Kinaco Skirt from Waffle Patterns, sold at Go-To Patterns, with the Women's Cowl Neck Tee from Sewing Geek Patterns. And again the bag is the Buckle Me Up Beauty, but a large version this time!

The Kinaco Skirt is sewn with a drapey grey fabric that I have absolutely no idea what it is.

It is a thrift shop purchase, but I love the softness and how ideal it is for fall!

The skirt's design is really neat--I really like the asymmetrical design and the fit is spot on.
For the lining, I used the same knit I used for the shirt--it is super soft and comfortable!

The Women's Cowl Neck Tee is sewn with a nice eggplant colored knit that I bought through a Canadian destash group on Facebook.

The shirt is comfortable, yet flattering. And, again...it's not just a plain t-shirt!
It is a super fast sew with an elegant cowl and an optional banded hem.
Also, the sleeves are a nice fluttery sleeve instead of the 'normal' tighter sleeve, which is a neat feature.

The Buckle Me UP Beauty is sewn with quilting cotton from Walmart and the accents are Essex linen from Fabric.com. Again, hardware is from Emmaline Bags. It's definitely large enough to be a diaper bag, for which I'm super excited--now I can have a stylish diaper bag as well for taking the kids out and about.

New Release--the Sunburst Clutch Pattern

Yay! It's here!

I've been plugging away at this pattern, and my testers have given me a hand.

Now, I can finally introduce you all to the Sunburst Clutch Pattern!

My first 'prototype' is the one on the right. I ended up extending the flap and shortening the wristlet.

The final is on the left, and I am super happy with the results!

Inside, there is a key ring, and a zippered pouch.

It closes with a magnetic snap.

But, one of the suggestions in the pattern is a turn lock.

I think that'd look really pretty!

It's perfect for a date night, or when you just want to
grab a quick bag instead of a purse full of stuff!

I love the piecing on it.

It is a bit of a trickier pattern--the piecing has to be done accurately, and being even a little off on the seam allowance will affect the total width of the pieced flap.

But, when done accurately, it really looks a bit like Sunburst--thus the name. (Thanks to one of my lovely testers for the suggestion!)

Stitch Swap--Pirate's Treasure Wallet Pattern

Stephanie from Swoodson Says organized a Stitch Swap for a group of us sewing bloggers.

I received a lovely package in the mail from Amy from Friends Stitched Together!

Amy sent me a package for my boys--pirate fabric.

But, instead of just sending one yard as the plan was, she sent a piece of coordinating fabric and a spool of yellow thread as well.

Now, the hard part was thinking of what to make for my boys so that at least the older two could have something made out of the fabric since they both *loved* the pirate ships!

I had recently made my daughter a purse which she carries to Church.

The boys decided that they needed a wallet so they could take money to Church.

After searching for a wallet pattern and not finding anything that I (they) liked, I decided I'd just make a pattern.
